Thanks to the script and the source material by Neil Gaiman, the movie delves into issues that are always in the back of the mind of children as well as many adults. Coraline, even though it’s a kids film, goes much deeper. A film can rely on the old go-tos – like a ghost jumping out at the screen or musical cues – to frighten the audience but it’s always more effective to go deeper.
But what is scary? The answer is subjective, different for me and for you. What makes a horror movie? First and foremost, it needs scares. But Coraline stands out because it not only showcases their artistic abilities but also their willingness to make something truly, truly spooky. Simply put, the crew at Laika are already in a class of their own. Their mastery of stop-motion, paired with creepy plots and kooky characters, have allowed them to carve out a niche spot in the crowded industry while other studios like Pixar and DreamWorks duke it out. Laika has quietly become one of the best names in animation. Even if you’re not a kid, this movie is a scary masterpiece. Coraline examines themes and ideas that’ll shake any child to their core. But there’s a major aspect of Henry Selick’s film that isn’t talked about as often: the fact that it’s a brilliant horror film for children. They also stated that the other unused songs that resulted from the Coraline project would eventually get released, but as of 2017 no other songs have been specifically identified as coming from the project.Coraline is celebrated for many things: its gorgeous animation, its beautiful soundtrack, its fantastic voice acting. In subsequent interviews, the band has mentioned that they were fully paid for their work on the soundtrack even though the songs were not used.
However, the song " Careful What You Pack" came out of the Coraline sessions and, after not being used for the film, was released on The Else. One song that did make the final cut is for John Hodgman's character the Other Father to sing to Coraline, "where the piano comes to life and plays him". I’m wondering whether to convince them to write all new songs for their, like, Yellow Submarine, or to just work with them and pick the ten best songs and see if I can find a way to string them together for a story". I was very happy to work with them and I'd love to work with them on another show where they have like ten songs in it. It was unfortunate - we did a lot of sort of preliminary work, there were a lot of false starts, and we never really found a rhythm to work with them." Director Henry Selick stated "They actually did some other demo songs that are brilliant, they are beautiful, but the film just kind of changed it wasn’t going to become a musical. In an interview Flansburgh said "They basically wanted the music to be more creepy. It seems appealing at first but it becomes very dark." The movie also features John Hodgman as Coraline's father(s).Įarly in the production of the movie, They Might Be Giants created several songs for the film. As John Linnell describes it, "A girl finds a door in her house that first opens to a brick wall, but at night, there's a crawlspace, a portal to another world.
