Most Commonwealth pattern FALs are semi-automatic only. All others have standard Imperial or "unified" inch-standard threads throughout. The only exceptions are early prototype FALs, and the breech threads only on Israeli and Indian FALs. Most FALs also use SAE threads for barrels and assemblies. Notable incompatibilities include the magazines and the butt-stock, which attach in different ways. Many sub-assemblies are interchangeable between the two types, while components of those sub-assemblies may not be compatible. The original FAL was designed in Belgium, while the components of the "inch-pattern" FALs are manufactured to a slightly modified design using British imperial units. The L1A1 was produced under licence and has seen use in the Australian Army, Canadian Army, Indian Army, Jamaica Defence Force, Malaysian Army, New Zealand Army, Rhodesian Army, Singapore Army and the British Armed Forces. The L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle, also known as the SLR (Self-Loading Rifle), by the Canadian Army designation C1A1 (C1) or in the US as the "inch pattern" FAL, is a British version of the FN FAL battle rifle produced by the Belgian armaments manufacturer FN Herstal.

I just need to find some tired/well used/inexpensive British wood to use as patterns.Royal Small Arms Factory and Birmingham Small Arms Company factories (UK), I think I'm going to attempt that in walnut this winter. I was looking on FALFILES at posts by a woodworker on making his own buttstock and pistol grip from cherry wood to add to his US parts count requirement. It really does make it impossible for me to sweep the safety to fire with my thumb with the firing hand on the pistol grip. There is no getting used to that trashy setup. My new to me SLR copy has a horrible thumbhole stock that's got to go. I also like to do the occasional mad minute with my Enfield No4.Mk1 I always liked to poke around the arms room and find stashes of old stuff M3 Grease guns, M14 rifles that were counter sniper rifles for our MP company, Colt commercial pistols new in the box from WWII that were owned by the NY Guard, which is one level down form the National Guard, I'd say comparable to your WWII Home Guard. There is certainly something about that be it familiarity muscle memory etc. Your lads were much more interested in the Sterlings, Hi-powers and L1A1s (SMG, SLP and SLR respectivley). They were very interesting to me though the Security Police couldn't understand why 'old' weapons would be. I did a couple of exercises with your ANG in the early 90's and got to examine a variety of M16s and an M60. Does anyone know what the correct barrel theading is for an L1A1?

I am working on a practical rifle more than anything. I am not totally looking for a restoration job. I will likely eventually get the nicer trigger group from SAF Lithgow but for now basic compliance is what I need most. Good luck on getting it converted back over.

That is also a good price as most places dont offer the trigger. I may also get a US charging handle slide towards that end. I ordered this to get things started while I save for better parts:Īlso ordered a US piston so I should be in shape unless I want a flash hider.

US trigger (3), PG, Butt Stock and US Receiver would be six parts plus the piston. I would be looking for a US receiver and put all the US parts that count in it that I could. The whole compliance parts is a load of shit too, I mean come on, you want me to discard an imbel or Enfield piston, a $8 part for a $30 US made one that probably isn't made as well. Ok, get my own post for a rant or shut up. Yeah I know it's capitalism but it's pretty cheesy on the boards and takes the fun out of it and diminishes the board to almost an ebay status when a handful of guys are making a business off the members. I'm getting irked seeing guys sharking the boards for the bargains and a couple days later IM'ing other guys that were looking for that part and offering it with a huge markup. Talking to my FAL-savvy friend they were the cheap stuff in the 80's and 90's as the kits were the common ones and everywhere. Well the original British wood is pretty outrageous too. I've been looking at US made inch type wood.

By metric lower being a compliance part, it would have to be an aftermarket US made metric lower and not say an Imbel or german metric lower.ĮTA- I'll be going through the same thing soon once my thumbholer arrives.
